Seney National Wildlife Refuge

The refuge has gone from glacial beginnings, creating and intricate network of creek and river channels, ridges, sandy knolls, tree lumbering, burning, then being exploited, drained, and finally abandoned, to reverting back to state ownership.  The refuge was established in 1935 for the protection and production of migratory birds and other wildlife.

Physical development and restoration then began.  An intricate system of dikes, dames, ditches and roads were built, impounding over 7,000 acres of open water in 21 major pools.

A diversity of wildlife species is maintained through wetlands, fire, and forest management.  Over 200 bird species, 26 fish species, and 45 mammals have been recorded.  The refuge contains 95,455 acres of marsh, field, and forest lands.

The visitor center is open 7 days a week from May 15 to Sept. 30.  You may tour by car May 15 through Oct 15.  70 miles of biking trails, a looped 1.4 mile trail for hiking, picnic area, canoeing, fishing, hunting, cross country skiing, and snow shoeing are permitted.  Go to the visitor center for details, maps, regulations, etc.
